- 2 large sweet or yellow onions sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs panko works best for extra crispiness
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Olive oil spray for crisping
Make the Batter:
In one bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the breadcrumbs.
Coat the Onion Rings:
Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, shaking off any excess.
Next, dip it into the buttermilk, ensuring it's fully coated.
Finally, coat the onion ring in breadcrumbs, pressing lightly to adhere.
Cook the Onion Rings:
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer, making sure they do not overlap. Lightly spray the top of the onion rings with olive oil.
Air fry at 400°F for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cook until the onion rings are golden and crispy.
- For a spicy kick, add 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture.
- You can substitute regular breadcrumbs with gluten-free breadcrumbs for a gluten-free option.
